It is painfully evident, says the Spectator of the recent gathering of students to discuss athletics, that the conference from which we had been led to expect so much, was in every sense a failure. Nothing was effected to which the slightest importance might be attached, and debate was conspicuous by its entire absence. These assertions may possibly seem severe, but are nevertheless eminently just. It was a natural supposition that some measures would be adopted on this important occasion, both salutary and wise ; on a review of the work, however, we find there is not a single enactment worthy of attracting more than ordinary attention. Subjects and resolutions were laid aside with a degree of composure rarely equaled in the history of debate.
