THE STUDY OF HISTORY.The essential knowledge of history, says Col. T. W. Higginson, consists not alone in names and dates, but in the facts illustrative of life and manners. In studying history three things are necessary: First, the main facts of history, which include names and dates; second, the illustrative facts and anecdotes; third, the principles involved, or the philosophy of history. To master the principles and become familiarly conversant with the leading historical events, especially of his own country, is the duty of every person, and should be taught so as to become the pleasure of every student of history.
