Prospects of the Nine.

It is rather early in the season to state definitely anything definitely in regard to the nine ; but everything tends to show that Harvard will have one of the strongest nines that she has ever put in the field. Le Moyne, Coolidge and Baker will not play this year ; but there are able players to fill their positions. The following men will train all winter, and will probably play in the nine. Nichols has been practising faithfully all the fall and will probably pitch. Allen will catch without doubt, as his fine record last year places him far ahead of college catchers. Smith has been playing with the Beacons the greater part of the summer and has made wonderful improvement in his batting ; he will play his old positlin at third, in which position two years ago, he led the league. He has improved in batting and his fine stops and accurate throwing are well remembered. There are a number of condidates for the position of short stop. Hurd '88 has been playing well in the infield, and by steady practice may be able to fill the position. Tilden will play left field, his old position ; his fielding was not up to the mark last year, but steady practice and faithful training we are sure will improve his record. Willard is the most promising candidate for centre field ; he is a hard hitter and sure fielder. Crocker has played all summer and has made wonderful improvement in his batting ; his batting has always been his weak point and with improvement in this respect he will play right field. He is a very fast runner and in the games played has proved himself the best base runner. Winslow has signified his intention of not playing this year ; we trust that he will change his mind, and again fill his old position in the box, where he did such good work last year. With Winslow and Nichols for pitchers, and Allen behind the bat, Harvard will be able to present a strong battery. We trust that the executive committee will decide to put the nine in strict training, and that the members of the nine will obey the rules. The uniforms will probably be changed. In place of the old gray blouse, a crimson and black striped blazer will be substituted and a crimson and black striped cap in place of the old hat. The diamond on Holmes and the entire field will be put in fine condition in the Spring, and a large number of new seats will be provided.
