Now that the mid-year examinations are close upon us, the subject of the return of blue books or the announcement of the marks to students comes to mind. In past years it has often happened that the marks were not announced to sections until many weeks after the examinations were over. This not only keeps the students in a state of unnecessary suspense, but often prevents them from learning in which courses they have been deficient and need to pay most attention to during second half-year. On the other hand a student may have valued his work in the examination room too highly and be tempted to slight a course in favor of others, until he learns to his dismay that he has been marked lower than the figures he coveted, when it will be too late for him to recover his lost ground. In some courses the work of correcting papers is very great and some delay cannot be helped, but it should be the design of instructors in such courses to have this delay as short as possible. In other courses there is no excuse why speedy returns should not be the rule.
