There is no doubt but that the crews, teams, and other organized bodies should have the first right to use the chest-weights in the gymnasium. That they should have the exclusive use of them during certain portions of every afternoon is a custom the justice of which may well be doubted. We are inclined to think that it is not quite fair for the unorganized mass of students, and wish to suggest a remedy. At the very time when there are most men in the gymnasium taking their regular exercise the weights can not be approached, as a usual thing, because some crew or nine is at work there. Consequently, all the other men have to delay their exercise an unnecessary length of time to get a chance at the weights or else forego the use of them entirely. The trouble is largely caused by the baseball men. The crews succeed each other in regular order and so only occupy a limited number of weights at a time; but the nines come up from the cage at the busiest time, while the crews are using one-half, and appropriate all that remains. The remedy should be, that crews and nines should all follow in regular order and never use more than the set of weights on one side. This would be no great hardship to them as they could easily schedule their weight exercise so that no clashing would occur and their weights be used continuously for a little longer portion of the afternoon. This arrangement would leave half of the weights always free for the use of anyone, and with such provision the unattached would be amply satisfied.
