The enthusiastic oarsmen of the University of Pennsylvania are determined to achieve fame in one way if debarred from it in another. Having tried in vain for two years to induce Harvard and Yale to gratify their desire to be seen in good company, they now take their revenge by challenging the whole country to row against them, and threaten that, if no one heeds their manifesto, they will proclaim themselves the national champions. If the bewildered nation fails within the specified sixty days to produce a crew, and thereby gives involuntary color to the Pennsylvanians' pretensions, they might go further, and challenge Oxford and Cambridge, announcing that, if a favorable reply is not received by return of post, they will assume the title of champions of the world.
