In the next number of the Century will appear several letters written by Emerson soon after he left Harvard. In one of these letters he enthusiastically praises Walter Scott, comparing him to Shakespeare. In another he expresses an opinion which he thoroughly disowned in later life - this opinion being that the Greek authors should be read only in the original.
