Although the game Saturday resulted in defeat for our nine, there is no reason to feel discouraged about our prospects. For the first 7 innings the game was sharply contested, and the superiority of play evidently lay with the Harvards. The batting of the nine was strong. Nichols excelled in this respect, placing to his credit a 3 baser, 2 baser and a single. White's work as pitcher was especially gratifying; not a hit was made off his delivery until the seventh innings and only four during the whole game. He fielded his position for all it was worth, and made several beautiful stops of hard-hit balls. The play of the freshmen members of the nine was noteworthy. Smith played an exceptionally good game on first, but his base-running was hardly up to the mark. Allen played a steady game behind the bat and made a very pretty catch of a foul tip from Richardson's bat. In the seventh inning Coolidge was run into by H. B. Hall, who was trying to steal second. The result was a severe sprain of the ankle which will prevent him from playing again for three or four weeks. Lovering came in to second and Keep took Lovering's place at right. In the next inning after one run was made by the Beacons, Allen was struck by the ball and had to stop playing. His place was taken by Baker who played an excellent game. Baker's place at short was taken by Keep. Nichols went to right and Lowell took centre field. After these changes the nine went to pieces and the Beacons scored two runs. The features of the game on the part of the Beacons' were the catching of Richardson and the left field play and batting of H. B. Hall. Following is the score:
