The Athletic Base-ball Club, the representative in Philadelphia of the American Association, opened the season last Saturday in a game with the Yale College Nine. The pitching of Matthews, of the Athletics, was very effective, and, he receiving an excellent field support, the collegians were retired without scoring in the game. Though the fielding of the Yales was good, the professionals, by heavy batting, succeeded in running up a total of twelve runs.
