The military display attendant upon commencement day is in danger of being cut off by action of the Massachusetts Legislature. One member said that such payment, which had averaged $641 for fourteen years, was a useless expense, and one of those extravagances that, in accordance with the recommendation of the governor, ought to be cut off. Thereupon another stated that the matter was one that directly concerned the governor, who is commander-in-chief of the militia, and that Massachusetts had some pride in maintaining its dignity, for which it was willing to incur some expense. The report of the committee on military affairs relative to prohibiting the use of funds from the treasury for the payment of a military escort to the governor was then accepted.
