EDITORS HARVARD HERALD: The wide-spread dissatisfaction in regard to Memorial Hall board is once more seeking expression. What we chiefly complain of is not that board is $4.58 a week, but that the food is of actually bad quality, and, more than that, is rendered almost uneatable by the poor cooking it receives. The amount received from over five hundred boarders at $4.58 a week certainly ought to provide food of good quality and well cooked; and with a capable and conscientious steward it would undoubtedly provide such food. Without exception, every student with whom I have talked about Memorial Hall has expressed a desire to have Mr. Balch removed and a competent man put in his place - a man who will give us food that we can eat. The repeated assertions of the directors, that they have full confidence in Mr. Balch, does not inspire the other boarders with confidence. The directors say that they know of no grounds on which to base Mr. Balch's dismissal. Is it necessary to have proofs in black and white that Mr. Balch does not manage the hall in the interests of the students? Is it not sufficient grounds for dismissal that he does not give satisfaction - nay, that he gives general dissatisfaction? The mildness of the directors is ascribed by some to the fact that Mr. Balch is relied on by President Eliot and the overseers, and it is said that it would be highly disrespectful to dismiss the steward against the will of the governors of the university. Respect for our governors is very well in its place; but when our health and comfort are concerned it becomes of secondary importance. President Eliot and the overseers, fortunately for themselves, do not board at Memorial Hall. Perhaps it might not be unwise to invite them to take their meals there for a month, and then ask them their opinion of Mr. Balch's management. I have intimated that food unfit to be eaten has been placed on the tables. It would be easy to give instances of this if they were not too disgusting to be mentioned.
