When Bates College was established Charles Sumner gave as its motto, "Studio ac amore." The class of '84 has given expression to its warm feeling for the memory of the deceased statesman by the purchase of Powers' statue, which has been presented to the college, and was unveiled last Friday evening with appropriate public exercises.
NOTES.Morison won the HERALD cup for general excellence, with a record of 43 1/2 points out of a possible 60.
The prizes won at the first two winter meetings are divided as follows: '83, 9; '84, 1; '85, 2; '86, 1; S. S., 3.
A number of visitors from the Institute of Technology were seen at the meeting. Their second meeting occurs next Saturday.
Mr. Bachelder withdrew from the contest for the HERALD prize for general excellence, as he wished to spare himself for the double trapeze and tug-of-war.
Excluding the tug-of-war the total number of entries for the three winter meetings was 83, divided among the classes as follows: '83, 41; '84, 9; '85, 7; '86, 22; Scientific School, 3; Medical School, 1.
The weights of the tug-of-war teams were as follows: '83 - Lilienthal, 132 3/8; Fuller, 147 1/2; Bachelder, 148 3/8; Easton, 168 1/4; total, 596 1/2. '86 - Adams, 141 1/2; Allen, 151 1/4; Cabot, 159; Dewey, 142 1/2; total, 594 1/4.
