BOAT HOUSE ITEMS.

A number of men gathered at the boat house yesterday afternoon to catch a first glimpse of the crews on the water. Although the seniors and juniors both did a little rowing Tuesday, still yesterday marked the first appearance of all the crews together and may be regarded as the beginning of the boating season. The tide was dead low before the crews were ready to start, making the launching of the boats quite difficult; this with the coldness of the weather and sharpness of the wind shortened the rows somewhat and made the men quite willing to get back to a warm room. Both pair-oars were in constant demand, being used principally by the seniors and juniors.

The university was the first crew out, rowing to the lumber-yard and back; they left the boat-house at a good swinging stroke, the oars striking the water with remarkable precision and unanimity. The seniors followed soon after, not rowing in very good form. The swing of the starboard men especially is poor. The new men in the boat broke up the time somewhat. The freshman launched out into their first attempt amid the smiles and kindly warnings of the assembled upper-class men.

The large float is being chopped out of the ice and will not be in position before next week. Until then the available space in the '83 and '84 boat-house will be somewhat crowded.

Following is a list of the crews : 'Varsity - Mumford, (bow); Sawyer, 2; Belshaw, 3; Gilman, 4; Perkins, 5; Hammond, 6; Clark, 7; Curtis, 8 (stroke). '83 - Morison (bow); Cabot, H.
