The newspaper statements that the senior class of Yale College is in a ferment over Prof. Sumner's free trade teachings, the excitement being increased by the recent tariff controversy between the professor and Mr. Evarts, are said, by a large majority of the students, to be without any foundation whatever. Prof. Sumner devotes himself to teaching political economy, they say, and makes no special effort to inculcate free trade doctrines, although always ready to express his views.
