Our correspondent on the subject of the mile walk entirely misunderstood our remarks on the contest of Saturday last. While we still insist that the time made by the handicapped man was poor, we do not wish to convey the impression that he is not a proper man to train for the event. Yale records will hardly do as a standard of comparison, as Yale is notoriously backward in the way of field athletics. What we meant to imply was that as our prospects for the event are not particularly encouraging, it would be well for the association to train the best man in college for the polo grounds. To determine who is the best man in college, it is necessary that all men who can do anything at all in the event should compete. As the gentleman mentioned in the account walked very creditably last year, it is but natural that we should wish him to enter again this fall. We made no comparisons whatever and merely believe that the entry of all available candidates will determine the best man.
