A successful freshman athletic meeting took place yesterday afternoon. The track and weather were both bad, but the events as a whole were well filled and the audience was large. The first event was the trial heats of the hundred yards dash. In the first heat there were four entries, Webster, Wetherbee, Higginson and Rogers. Rogers won easily in 11 5-8s. There was a hard fight for second place between Wetherbee and Rogers, which Wetherbee finally won by a few inches. The second heat had three entries, Rust, Ashe and Briggs. Rust won with Ashe second, it was evident that Ashe was merely trying for a place in the final heat. Time 11 3-4s. The next event, the one mile run, had three entries, Webster, Ayer and Remington. Remington did not come up to scratch, and the race lay between the other two. The first four laps were slow and uninteresting, but the last lap was well and pluckily fought. Webster won in 5m. 31 2-5s. with Ayer a good second.
The running high jump had four entries, Higginson, Keyes, Scott and Rogers. Higginson fell out at 4 ft. 5in., Keyes at 4ft. 8in., Rogers at 5ft., and the event was won by Scott by a jump of 5ft. 2-5in. The form of both Rogers and Scott was remarkably good.
In the 220 yards dash only two men came up to scratch, Ashe and Meredith. Ashe won, running well withing himself, in 25 7-8s.
In the one mile walk there were only two entries, Higginson and Shattuck. Higginson fell out at the end the third lap, and Shattuck finished in 8m. 57s. Shattuck's form was good, and he would have done much better had he been pressed and not interfered with as he was by the spectators crossing the track while he was working his last lap.
In the half-mile run there were only two entries, Remington and Meredith. It was a well contested event, and was won after a plucky spurt by Meredith in 2m. 23 1-4s.
The running broad jump had only two entries. It was won by Rust with a record of 16ft. 2in., Wetherbee second with a record of 14ft. 7in.
The final heat of the hundred consisted of Rogers, Wetherbee, Rust and Ashe. It was a well contested event, and was won by Ashe in 11 1-4s., with Rogers a good second.
The meeting ended with the quarter-mile run. There were three entries in this event, Keyes, Ashe and Meredith. Only Keyes and Ashe came up to the scratch however. The event was won easily by Ashe in 65 1-2s.
The meeting on the whole was successful, and shows that there is good material for athletics in '87.
