We trust that the instructor in Political Economy 1, will not carry out his plan of holding a fourth hour recitation in the week, for the purpose of answering questions. Although this extra hour is supposed to be voluntary, it practically makes the course a four hour one, as all who have questions to ask will be obliged to attend, and the instructor has announced that he expected questions from all and that the full benefit of the course could not be obtained without a free use of questions and open discussion. Another thing which makes this hour compulsory in the minds of many is a remark made by the instructor to the effect that he should judge by their attendance at this extra hour who in the course were taking an interest in the subject. Thus a man has his choice between being considered an idler by the instructor or attending the extra recitation.

On account of the large number in the section no hour can be fixed upon for this extra recitation which will not cause a conflict to many, and these men will be entirely debarred from asking questions.

The reason given for establishing this extra hour is that the instructor has not time to deliver his lecture and answer the questions of such large sections in his regular hours, but it should be remembered that questions are chiefly valuable when arising in connection with the subject, and questions which would be of much service if asked immediately are forgotten or of no use if they must be kept a week. There are many men in the course who cannot afford to give to it more time than they do already, especially when there is no compensation offered for the loss of their privilege of asking those immediate questions which are most productive of good.
