On Saturday afternoon the first hare and hounds run of the season took place. The hares, Mr. Harrison '86, and Mr. Rust '87 started at 3-10 P. M. from the steps of Matthews; 5 minutes later the hounds were sent off, Captain Smith leading. The course lay up Quincy St. and Oxford, then by Sacramento to Beacon St. The hounds had hardly got out of the yard before they lost the trail, and on Beacon St. Mr. Smith got a severe header but he pluckily mounted again and finally won second prize. On Beacon St. the hounds again took the wrong turning, the scent not lying well, and went nearly half a mile out of the way before they discovered their mistake. From Beacon St. the route lay over Somerville hill by a very roundabout way to Union and Central Squares. Here the scent was very bad and the route very winding, so that over and over again the hounds lost their way. From Central Square the route lay by Magazine St., across the river to the Mill-Dam, here again the hares or rather hare, as Mr. Rust had had to give up, thus losing the race to Mr. Harrison as really the hares are supposed to keep together, made many windings till the Mill Dam was again reached. Here the order was given to break for home, Smith, Matthewson and Appleton leading, Norton and Proctor 150 yards behind. Norton caught the front hounds soon, but lost by taking the wrong turning to Allston, but at Allston was leading again, cutting out the pace very fast, he finished first, going very strong at Brighton bridge. The time of the hare was 1 hr., 7 m., 55 sec.; Norton 1 hr., 13 m., 24 sec.; Matthewson 1 hr., 13 m., 28 sec.; Smith 1 hr., 13 m., 31 1-2 sec. All the other hounds, Messrs. Appleton, Proctor, Robbins, Ayer, Masson, Hogue, Thompson, finished in the order named. Mr. Robbins plucky riding was much praised. The course was a difficult one, about 15 miles for the hounds and owing to the losing of scent constantly and the bad roads, it was impossible for the scratch man to get away from the other hounds. Owing to Mr. Norton being handicapped, as a previous winner, 1st and 2nd prizes go to Mr. Matthewson L. S. S. and Captain Smith respectively. Mr. Harrison was awarded time cup. Altogether the run was a great success and the club feels much encouraged at the great number of finishers, (for all who started finished,) and the close finish only half a minute behind, a result never before attained in a hare and hounds run. Mr. John G. Coolidge '84, kindly acted as timekeeper for the run. The club starts for Lexington at 5 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon. Return by moonlight.
