It is said that the new stroke adopted by the Yale College oarsmen differs from the old one in these particulars: The reach forward is much longer, and the body is not swung so far back of the perpendicular. The slides are shorter, and on the recover the body is drawn up slower, which, it is held, does not stop the momentum of the boat as much as the quicker slide. The hands are thrown away from the body very rapidly. The oars are pulled through the water about as quickly as last year, however. Although the motions within the boat are not all so swift as formerly, yet the stroke is a live one, with much dash to it, and is much more pleasing to watch, because of the increased bodily swing.
