Yesterday's Post says of the new college song book : "It will be a long time ere this or any similar work can take the place of the old 'Carmina Collegensia," so familiar to students and alumni of all our leading colleges. A representative college song book cannot be made, as this one seems to have been, by getting certain ambitious tyros to write words and music, which are then put under the caption of their respective colleges. The real college song book is something of long growth, and is not written to order. In the course of years the students of any college will have hundreds of songs, out of which a choice few will survive and become firmly established as the representative song of that college. A collection of songs of this character may rightly claim to be representative, but a work that is avowedly made up of new songs, written especially for this special purpose, and the most of which, ere the year has passed away, will be forgotten, can in no sense be regarded as representative. We find in this work a few of the old favorites, but most of the standard songs that are loved by the old boys of years gone by and the young boys of today, are cast aside to make room for the new and ephemeral productions of the present. The real American college song book that is to take the place of the dear old 'Carmina' has yet to come."
