BASE-BALL.

Harvards, 17: Browns, 13.

The Harvards lost the toss, and at 4 o'clock Coolidge stepped to the bat. The first ball pitched was hit hard to third, who fumbled it and threw wild to first. Chase, to keep up the record, threw over Dilts' head to Doran, who fumbled it until Coolidge had reached the home plate, scoring the first run of the game. Olmsted and Baker then made hits, Nichols retired on a foul bound and Crocker struck to third, forcing Olmsted and retiring Baker by a fine double play. Brown retired in one, two, three order.

In the second inning Hall made a hit to centre, but was left on second, the next three men going out. For Brown, Smith made a clean drive to right. Chase knocked to Le Moyne, who, to cut off Smith, threw wild to Coolidge, the ball going to Nichols, who in turn overthrew to Le Moyne, letting Smith reach home. The next three men went out in order. Score, 1 to 1.

Coolidge led off the third inning by striking out. Olmsted sent another liner to centre, and came in on a wild pitch and a wild throw by Greene of a ball off Nichols' bat. For Brown, Payne, who got his base on balls, came in on hits made by Dilts and Smith and a wild throw by Le Moyne to first. Score, 2 to 2.

It now became evident that neither nine was to have a walk-over, and interest began to deepen in the fourth inning. Crocker hit to Greene, who made another low throw to Chase, on which Crocker reached third, and was brought in by a sacrifice by Hall. This ended Harvard's run-getting for two innings. With two men out, Payne made a sharp hit by second, and was brought home on a three-baser by Dilts, which struck the church that supports centre field, on the fly. Dilts in turn was brought in by a two-baser of Greene, thus earning two runs. Score, 3 to 4.

In the sixth Nichols hit to short, who made the customary wild throw to first, on which Nichols reached second. He came home on a fine two-baser of Burt's to the centre field. For Brown, Payne struck out; Dilts made a hit by first base; Greene followed with anoth-to left which sent Dilts to third; he came in on a wild pitch. Bassett hit safely to Crocker, who threw to first, nearly catching him. Burt threw home to cut off Greene, but Hall dropped the ball and this let in Greene and Bassett, giving Brown three unearned runs. The score was now 7 to 4, in favor of Brown, and matters began to look dubious for Harvard. The supporters of the crimson, however, kept up courage and gave the nine nine rousing cheers as they came to bat, and the sequel showed that their encouragement was not in vain. Le Moyne struck out; Coolidge made a splendid drive to left, which nearly bored a hole through the high board fence which forms a worthy assistant to the church in preventing home runs. Olmsted followed with a hit which succeeded in overreaching the fence, but was balked by the wire screen which, to make assurance doubly sure, is built above the fence about five feet. This brought in Coolidge, earning the first run for Harvard. Baker got his base on balls; Nichols sent a high fly to Payne, who kindly muffed it, letting Baker score another run. Crocker struck out but Bassett let the ball through his legs and Nichols came in, leaving Crocker to finish the run-getting and that inning on a muff by Chase of a ball thrown by Dilts off Burt's bat. The score was now 9 to 7, in favor of Harvard, on uneven innings, and the air was rent with cheers for the crimson. The 150 Harvard men on the grounds made noise enough for three times their number, but Brown's supporters did not give up but gave their nine a rousing reception as they came for their half of the inning. Durfee led off with a fine liner to centre; Shedd flied out to Le Moyne; Payne sent a hot ball to Baker who fumbled it, and in attempting to cut off Durfee at second threw wild to Coolidge, letting Durfee get third, with two men on bases; Dilts hit safely to left, bringing in Durfee and Payne; Greene sent one to Le Moyne, who threw wild to first, letting Dilts make third; Bassett sent a hot liner through Crocker's hands, bringing in Dilts and Greene; the next two men went out, leaving the score at the end of the seventh inning, 11 to 9, in Brown's favor.

It was now Harvard's turn to brace. Le Moyne struck out. Coolidge reached first on Chase's muff of Greene's throw, and improved the opportunity to take second on the next ball pitched. Having stolen one base he was ready to steal another, and accordingly on the next ball pitched took possession of third. Olmsted got his base on balls. Baker hit to short, who threw home to cut off Coolidge, but threw wild enough to let in both Coolidge and Olmsted, thus tieing the score. Baker came in on a wild pitch. This ended the runs for that inning, and the score stood 12 to 11 in Harvard's favor.

Brown failed to score in the next inning, and for the first time since the third inning Harvard stood ahead on even innings.

They now came in for the ninth inning, and every effort was made to increase the lead. Hall led off with a long two-baser, at which the enthusiasm was boundless. Burt went out, Dilts to Chase. Bean struck the church for a two-baser, bringing Hall in and earning Harvard's second run. Le Moyne flied out to Dilts, Coolidge hit safely to centre, bringing in Bean. Olmsted made another drive to left for a single base and reached second on a passed ball, and Baker sent him home by a two-baser. Nichols sent up a high fly, which was muffed by Smith, letting in Baker thus giving five runs in the last inning, three of which were earned.

Brown came in with a lead of six to overcome, but were retired after runs had been made by Dilts and Greene, and the game was decided in Harvard's favor, 17 to 13.

The features of the game were the batting of Olmsted, Bean, Dilts and Greene, the brilliant first base play of Burt and assists of Crocker from right field, and fine base running of Coolidge. The score:
