Every one recognizes the impetus given to the study of the classics by the granting of second-year honors in that department. A suggestion has been made that second-year honors be granted in other departments as well as in classics and mathematics. There are many men who take about six hours in several departments and there is no reason why such men should not get a recognition similar to that given the men who take classical courses. A great many men would be willing to do extra work in chemistry, for instance, if they could get some such encouragement as second-year honors would give. They do not want to devote enough time to these courses to take final honors, but are willing to devote some extra time to a course if honors were the reward.
