At the meeting of the committee of fifty in the directors' room of Memorial Hall yesterday afternoon, about thirty were present. The situation was thoroughly discussed, and the general opinion seemed to be that energetic measures should be taken at once. There are thirteen boarders in the hall who have not previously been there this year. Two hundred and ninety-four of the present boarders have signed to remain with the hall, and more will soon do so. The hall has now about three hundred and thirty men. The following resolution was adopted :
Resolved, That the committee of fifty recommend to the board of directors that the steward be directed to cut down the price of board to $4.25 per week, by means of reducing the variety, and that the articles of food removed from the regular bill of fare be put on the order list at prices just sufficient to cover the actual cost of the provisions used.
The chief objection raised to rejoining the association has been found to be the uncertainty of knowing in advance the price of board at Memorial from month to month throughout the year.
The second resolution adopted was -
That a petition be circulated among the members of the university to the effect that they will join the association after the spring recess, provided the price of board does not exceed $4.25 per week. That if such petition be not signed by five hundred men on or before April 4th, the hall will not be opened after the spring recess.
At an adjourned meeting of the committee at 6.30 P. M., the following motions were adopted :
That the board of directors be requested to instruct the steward to keep the price of board as near $4.10 as possible. If the price should at any time exceed the maximum ($4.25) decided upon, the steward shall suffer such penalty as the directors may hereafter determine.
That the penalty inflicted on the steward be a deduction from his salary equal to the amount by which the board shall have exceeded $4.25 per week.
That the steward's salary be computed according to the number of men in the association.
It must be noticed that these resolutions are merely advisory, and must receive the confirmatory vote of the directors and the corporation before going into effect.
