It is often complained that the subjects assigned in themes are too general in character and require too much outside reading by men. Although this, of itself, may be really a benefit, the plan of one American university is worth considering. Every student must present "for examination and criticism, during the period of his study, papers suggested by the work he has been engaged in" to give evidence that he can write good English.
