It seems probable that the new rule adopted by the colleges on President Eliot's initiative, forbidding the league nines to play with professionals or to have the services of professional coaches in their training, will work greatly to the advantage of the nines of the smaller colleges such as Amherst and Dartmouth, who have had few of these advantages. Consequently it can be expected that next year's contest will be far closer than that of the season just closed. If, also, as is expected, Williams makes application and is admitted to the college league, another dangerous rival will be added to the list of contestants for the championship; for a lively interest in base-ball has always existed at Williams, and from the material now in the college an exceptionally strong nine can undoubtedly be formed.
