IN response to numerous requests from members of the University, we present this week a list of those best American Amateur records which are held by Mr. L. E. Myers of the Manhattan Club, New York, the gentleman who is to represent America in the English Amateur championships this spring. Up to November 20th last, Mr. Myers held, in addition to the following list, the best record at 300 yards and 350 yards running, with records of 34 1-5 and 39 seconds respectively; but on the above date Mr. R. S. Haley of the Olympic Club, San Francisco, succeeded in bettering Myers's times at these distances (as mentioned in the Crimson at the time), 32 5-8 and 38 1-4 seconds for the respective distances being credited to him; and since this time Mr. Myers has not had an opportunity to attempt the surpassing of Mr. Haley's records.
The two most prominent of Myers's English opponents will be Mr. W. P. Phillips of the London Athletic Club, whose records are very fast for the short distances, i.e., 100 yards in 10 1-5 seconds, 120 yards in 12 seconds, 150 yards in 15 seconds, and 220 yards in 22 2-5 seconds; and for the longer distances Mr. W. C. George, Moseley Harriers, whose record for the mile run, 4 minutes and 23 1-5 seconds, is about 5 1-2 seconds faster than Myers's own record. Myers's American friends, however, are confident of his ability to hold his own against any athletes England can produce, and he will leave New York on the 21st of May next, with the good wishes and confidence of a host of friends all over the country.
The London Athletic Club have made him an honorary member of their club, so that on his arrival he will have every opportunity given him to prepare for his contests. Appended is the desired list: -
