SITING alone in the gloaming,
I dream of the days to be,
When I shall have done with my roaming,
And you will be ever with me.
When I shall be singing no longer
Sad songs for the world's dull ear,
But the notes shall grow sweeter and stronger
That no one but you may hear.
When you shall teach me with gladness
Love's lesson so sweet and fair;
And love shall shield us from sadness,
And lighten the burden of care.
When love shall be ours without measure,
And time shall pass like a dream,
And life shall be rich with the treasure
Of joy that a poet might theme.
This is the dream that has bound me
To-night with its pleasant chain,
While twilight has gathered around me,
And night has grown darker with rain.
