SONNET.

O NATURE, tell me what is really right,

For thou alone dost know true right and wrong,

And art outside of man the only strong,

Sufficient, steadfast power, guide, and light.

And dumb art thou, although weak men have long

Demanded utterance and with pomp and song

Have worshipped thy unsympathizing night.

Yea, speak in voices from the calm blue sky,

Or speak in signs and voices from the earth,

Or speak in signs and wonders from the sea,

And teach me how to live and how to die,

And tell me all the reason of my birth

And what I am, for I can ask but thee.
