IN another column will be found the last of three articles by a graduate on the subject of scholarships, in which he has favored a system of open scholarships. Since we received this third article a long letter from Mr. T. W. Higginson has appeared in the New York Nation, in which he takes the same ground. The arguments have been well stated, and it only remains for us to express our agreement with the views of these writers. They have certainly supported the side of the case which is taken by the great majority of undergraduates; in fact, we have not yet met a single one who entirely defended the present system. We are glad to notice that Mr. Higginson has called attention to the fact which we mentioned some time ago, namely, that the President has not touched the question at issue at all in his recent report. As we are well aware that anything which we can say on this subject will have very little influence with the authorities, it is a source of satisfaction to us that an article has appeared which will probably be read by them and will furnish them with some food for thought.
