THE announcement that the Christmas vacation is to be lengthened to two weeks, and the spring recess to ten days, is most welcome to the entire College, - instructors as well as students. The Corporation are to be most heartily thanked for this extension of our times of rest. Report says, however, that the reason of this change is that the college year is thirty-nine weeks long this year, instead of thirty-eight; and, as this extra week is out of the common course, it is to be given us in vacation. It is a well-known fact that the large majority of instructors and students think that the ordinary recesses are insufficient; and we would strongly urge the Corporation to make this year's arrangement a permanent one. A saving of more than a week has been made in the time of the mid-year and annual examinations; and more rest is needed by us all than ever before, as undoubtedly instructors are working both themselves and their pupils harder. Hour examinations and theses have never been imposed in such numbers as this year. Apart from these considerations, the advance of the College in other ways should be marked by an abandonment of the old high-school notion that the shorter the vacations the larger the amount of knowledge gained, and by a recognition of the principle that by vacations of a suitable length the minds of all members of the College are so invigorated that the work done is better than it otherwise would be. While gratified by the present extension, then, we trust it may be made permanent.
