THE instructor's corrections and criticisms form the most valuable part of the work in themes, and deserve the most careful attention. If, however, the corrected theme is not returned until the time when the new one is handed in, the student is unable to make full use of these corrections, and the faults of the first theme are repeated in the second for the simple reason that attention has not yet been called to them. This is especially the case in the Sophomore themes, where the writer has had but little previous practice, and has not learned to criticise his own work. If some arrangement could be made so that a theme could be returned with corrections in season to serve as a guide in the composition of the next, those who really wish to learn how to write would have an opportunity to make more rapid improvement than they can make at present.
