- The Freshmen seem to have given up all idea of boating, and their captain is training with the Freshman nine.
- There is talk of re-establishing "Sinonia and Bro hers."
- The annual announcement of the Junior appointments is out, and gives an indication of general high scholarship.
- Two ambitious Seniors went to Lake Whitney to skate; for a while they succeeded bravely; but, skating too near the water's edge, they tumbled in. A small boy and his sister happening that way rescued them. All the parties are doing as well as could be expected.
Amherst.- The petition for a three weeks' vacation was acknowledged in no way by the President.
- A Freshman asked the captain of the foot-ball team to lend the University suits for a game between '80 and '81.
- It is asserted that one of the Amherst students, while making a call at Smith College, told the young ladies that a dance was soon to take place in Amherst, and, if they would find some way to get over there the students would take them to the dance!
- Foot-ball challenges have been received from Trinity and Yale, and have both been declined.
Columbia.- The Second Annual Ball for the benefit of the Boat Club comes off at Delmonico's on the 16th of January.
- The next Freshman class will have to pass for admission on three books of the Iliad, instead of two, as heretofore.
- "A raid was made the other night on the signboard of the C-o-l-u-m-b-i-a Hotel, and the obnoxious letters painted out. It was, however, semi-successfully cleaned with spirits of turpentine, and now maintains an elevated position and blurred appearance on the roof of the building."
Williams.- The card-playing mania is rapidly spreading, and has already done great damage in East College.
- The hymn book used in chapel is pronounced unsatisfactory. One corresponding to that used at Yale is wanted.
- Students who attend the services at the Methodist church on Sunday evenings "carry their rowdyism so far as to distract the attention of a large portion of the audience, annoy the speaker, and insult members of the congregation."
Trinity.- There is to be an Athletic Exhibition in the College. Gymnasium some time this month.
- The selection of papers in the reading-room is not acceptable. No provision has been made for lighting the room.
- Two hundred and forty volumes have been added to the Library since January, 1877, and there is not room enough for all. It is expected that next year the Library will be open some hours every day.
Miscellaneous.- Twenty-five of the Brown students sing in the Moody and Sankey choir.
- The Philidon Chess Club of Cornell hopes to be successful in the matches it is now playing with Princeton and Ann Arbor.
- At Vassar "the Sunday night `sings' have become one of the pleasantest features of the social life which centres round the Senior parlor. The entire informality of these `sings' constitutes their greatest charm."
