THE University Nine played the first game of the series for the College championship with Brown last Saturday. Owing to the absence of the first baseman of the Brown Nine, play was not called until half an hour after the appointed time. The first two innings were played in a heavy shower, so that the errors made then, on account of the soaked condition of the ball, were excusable.

Leeds led off for Harvard with a long fly to left field, which was well taken by Tyler. Wright got his first on an error of the third baseman, took second on a passed ball, and came home op Tyng's two-base hit. Tyng was put out while attempting to steal third. Thayer took first on an error by pitcher, stole second, and scored on a hot grounder of Ernst's which the third base failed to stop. Dow closed the inning by giving the short stop an easy fly. For Brown, Nickerson reached first by Thatcher's missing the third strike, Salisbury retired on a foul fly to Thayer, Tyler struck to Sawyer and was put out at first. Comstock batted a hot grounder through Leeds and took his second, Nickerson in the mean while scoring. Lee followed with a base hit bringing in Comstock. Griffin reached first on an error of Thayer, but was left there, as the next man struck to short stop and was retired at first.

In the second inning Latham opened with a base hit, and Thatcher got first on an error by short stop. Sawyer then struck to third, forcing out Latham, while Thatcher was caught between second and third base. Leeds then made a beautiful hit between left and centre fields, bringing in Sawyer, but was put out while trying to reach third.

Brown did not score in this half of the inning, nor did they get another run until the seventh, while Harvard scored two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two in the seventh. In the seventh inning Brown scored one, the man being brought in on a balk by Ernst. In the next inning they seemed to get hold of our pitching, and on three base hits, aided by eight errors by our Nine, scored four unearned runs.

This ended the game as far as run-getting is concerned, as both sides were blanked in the last inning, leaving the score 10 to 7 in favor of Harvard.
