SONNET.

From Alfred de Musset.

AS when the rosebud in the hedge

Breaks into life and bliss,

Seeming to glow with tender smiles

At Zephyr's gentle kiss,

And, feeling the young bud expand,

The tender, fragile shoot

Pulsates with joy and longing love

Down through its very root;

Thus when my gentle Phyllis sings,

From parted lips the sweet song rings,

While gazing upwards with blue eyes,

A midst the harmony and light,

Her very soul seems to take flight,

And, trilling softly, mount the skies.
