"Perhaps the nine can beat the eleven; we think otherwise." - HERODOTUS.
THE Cricket Eleven played a very fine game last Saturday, on the East Cambridge grounds, with the Mayflowers of Boston.
The Harvards were sent first to the bat, and scored 27, with 9 extras. The bowling of both Watts and Pettin was very effective, Sullivan and Rives being the only ones who made much resistance. The Mayflowers fielded well. Their diminutive long-stop was especially agile; and Temple made a sharp catch from Walker's bat.
The Mayflowers then went to the bat, and, by the very loose fielding of the Harvards, at the close of the inning had made 41. The feature of the inning was Walker's bowling, which was very accurate and destructive.
After lunch the Harvards went in, and batted so safely and vigorously as to completely tire out their opponents. Dwight, Green, and Sullivan all made double figures; Lee carried out his bat for 18; and Harris was called out by a wrong decision of the Harvard umpire, while batting beautifully. Ninety-nine runs was the score when the last wicket fell.
The Mayflowers were then disposed of for 44, of which Pettin, not out, made 15, and Temple 9, after blocking a great number of balls splendidly bowled by Walker. The fielding of the Harvards was in marked contrast to that of the first inning. Green, Dwight, and Rives each made a remarkable catch; and Withington played long-stop to perfection, not giving a single bye, and making some very difficult stops.
