WERE dirty vituperation argument, the criticism upon Dr. Bartol's "Radical Problems" in the last Madisonensis would be very effective. It proposes to alter the title to "Lying Made Easy." It accuses him of good, square misrepresentations, or lies, and of lies oblique. The spirit of the article may be gathered from the comments upon garbled passages quoted from his work, many of which passages, by the by, strike us as particularly fine: "Too bad:"-" No; we hate lying."-"O blind man: O blind man:"-"Ah:"-"Here's richness! here's oiliness!"-"O, some of these Unitarian Radicals are noble liars."-"The Rev. Mr. Bartol can be dogmatic as any mighty fierce little lamb."-"Was Jesus a sneak?"-"Now, dear sir, don't measure Jesus by your twelve-inch rule."-"O my! O my! you big fool!" In another part of the paper it is stated that the Madisonensis seeks occasionally to remove blemishes by kind and wholesome criticism. One would think so!
THE election of editors for the Cornell Era has taken place at Cornell. They are chosen by a class vote at the end of the Sophomore year. The opinion has been here expressed that the papers of our own University would be likely to obtain better editors by a similar system than by the one now in practice. In reply, we would state that, as it seems to us, a class election would be open to serious objections. A man's ability as a writer cannot be correctly judged from a few articles, which are all that the class have for the basis of their opinion. His unsuccessful articles are known to the editors alone; his writing may be uneven; one piece may be good and make a reputation for its author, and then half a dozen go deservedly to the waste basket. Moreover, many articles which appear have been bolstered and physicked and amputated until almost entirely changed. In this case would the class be likely to choose wisely? Concerning another danger,-the most important one,-we quote from the Era: "As for ourselves we cannot help feeling grieved at the evident tendency, exhibited by some parties in this election, to make mere popularity-sometimes of the thinnest kind-a test in the election of men for such responsible positions as editors of the Era. Those who fill the position not only represent the students here, but also are held as representatives of the University, in a certain sense, by other universities and colleges; hence, to do credit to it needs not only good literary ability, but straightforward manliness, sound judgment, and integrity." In a class election, with Sophomore societies and Sophomore cliques in the field, we doubt if all these qualities would be kept in view.
