"COLLEGE MAKES A MAN OR MARS HIM."

I KNOW a man of seventy years,

Who has the ancient love of knowledge;

And don't he like the new ideas

That now prevail at Cambridge College?

"Fair Harvard" is his single tune

For all the hymns that speak of heaven;

And he is coming here in June,

E'en now he blows for '77.

But will this Freshman be the boy

To live a life that's studious, very?

(For Ludwig Dindorf would employ

His nights in avocations merry,

If he were called as boys invite, -

If he could hear the cry in chorus:

"That beard so gray proclaims your right, -

Accept our homage; please reign o'er us!")

Now, should he Learning's honors see,

And, full of glowing ardor, choose 'em,

Then what a jewel that shall be,

Ablaze on Alma Mater's bosom!

But can one dread to be a shirk

On whom no eyes at home are centred?

Will he prepare for after-work?

He finished that before he entered!

And this old cove can sing so well,

And gives such wine, and knows such stories,

That he - alas! I hate to tell -

Will be seduced by social glories.
