Not the least of the new additions to the Yale scene is the Oyster Club. It may not seem as magnificent as the Library and its birth may not have been heralded as far and wide as that of the new quadrangles, but it serves a very necessary purpose. If they are to live healthy, balanced lives, Yale undergraduates need moments of relaxation and refreshment as much as they need their books and comfortable living quarters.

The tonic which the Oyster Club dispenses is really something more than the beverage which it serves. It is a tonic of enthusiasm, of spontaneity, which has been sorely needed by the present Yale generation. The old grad who drops in for a stein or so is reminded of the conviviality of his college days--without their boorishness.

If the Yale is going to break the sacred Eighteenth (sic) and drink, he might as well drink what is wholesome, beer. And if he is going to drink beer, he might as well drink good beer in a congenial place. The congeniality its popularity. Furthermore, it is run by self-supporting students chosen by the directors, who are themselves undergraduates;

Good food, frequent music, and singing are other attractive features of the Oyster Club. But it serves another purpose besides that of relaxation, or invigoration. Patronized also by members of the Faculty, it is an aid towards bringing together into closer social relations the professor and his pupils. It is likewise almost the only place where Freshmen and Sophomores can meet upperclassmen on an equal footing.

These remarks are merely a commentary. The Oyster Club needs no boosting. It has hoisted itself by its own boot-straps. --Yale Daily News.
