ROW FIRST RACES OF ANNUAL FALL REGATTA

SMITH LEADS STANDISH BY INCHES

Despite an intermittent drizzle and a light fog, the first races in the Fall Crew Regatta were run off yesterday afternoon.

The races were all fairly close, but the brush between 1923 B and 1922 B and the struggle between the Smith and Standish crews were particularly interesting. 1923 B managed to nose out its rival by a quarter of a length, while Smith just edged over the line inches in front of Smith in 6 minutes and 1 second, the fastest time of the day. Neither 1923 A or 1923 C reported in time for the race, though the former turned out to pace University A for a mile. The 1922 eight easily took the race for first class crews, defeating 1921 by an easy two lengths. In the race between the Freshmen dormitory second crews, Gore emerged ahead of the field by a length. All the races were rowed downstream over the mile course. The regatta will be completed tomorrow.
