The Pierian Sodality of 1808, Harvard's orchestra and one of its oldest organizations, has begun its one hundred and thirty-second season with the holding of tryouts for the past two days.

Starting as a select club of flute players 125 years ago, the Pierian has grown into the controlling body behind the University Orchestra, which has swelled its numbers to 50 musicians from most departments of the University. The majority of its members, however, are undergraduates.

Conductor of Harvard's only instrumental organization which thrives on a diet of undiluted classical music is Malcolm H. Holmes '28. Now a member of the Wellesley College Music Faculty, he himself headed the Pierian in his Senior year here.

Among the pieces tentatively on the Orchestra's repertoire are Haydn's "Clock Symphony," "Magnificat" by Vaughn Williams, and symphonies by Mozart and Schubert.
