Coach E. L. Farrell yesterday started 75 Freshmen on intensive practice for the winter track season. University runners will not be out in force until next Monday, as many of them are resting following the close of the cross-country and football seasons.
Practice yesterday was held in the old baseball cage, where Coach Farrell put his men through a number of starts and short sprints. The outdoor board track will be ready for us in a week, and then the winter runners will start developing their endurance and wind by long runs.
Winter track affords the best opportunity for men to receive individual coaching in their events. All regular track events are on the winter program except the javelin, discus, and hammer throws, which are not a part of the meets. Coaching in these events is given, however, in preparation for the spring session.
The 35-pound weight is used in the winter meets as a substitute for the hammer. The old baseball cage will be used for practicing this event, as well as the pole vault, hurdles, and broad and high jumps.
