An interesting development in the Stevens system was brought to light yesterday afternoon when the coxes of both the University and Freshman crew squads were given definite instruction in coaching the crews. This plan will be used next Monday when the University, experienced Freshmen, and class crews take to the water. In past years the coxes have done little, if any coaching of their crews but with the definite course of instruction which they are now receiving they will be in a position to offer advice that may be a great help to the coaches in developing the crews, since each has such a good opportunity to study each of the members of his crew at close range. It was with this object in view that Coach Sam Shaw of the Freshman crews spent much time with the first year cox candidates. Later in the afternoon Coach Shaw explained to the experienced Freshmen, who reported today for the first time, the new stroke that will be used exclusively this year. Today the experienced yearlings will be on the machines in the last practice before they go out on the water on Monday. The inexperienced Freshmen will continue on the machines for a while under the eyes of Coaches Bert Haines and Bill Haines.

The University yesterday rowed as a squad on the machines and will do so again today. Monday the squad will be split up into four University crews with the remainder of the squad as 150-pound and class crews. The 150-pounders will not go on the water Monday, however, in order to give Coach Fred Newell an opportunity to look over his squad.
