What’s a Thetan?
You think you know (about Scientology), but you have no idea. So grab your copy of “Dianetics,” pack Suri and the family in the Volvo, and head out to the Boston production of “A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant.” Documenting the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, the show features a cast of children, sarcastically belting tunes about the late messianic sci-fi writer and describing the trappings of Scientology, like auditing, the ARC Triangle, Xenu, and the Galactic Confederacy.
Runs Wednesday through Sunday until Dec. 16 at varying times. BCA Plaza Theatre. Tickets $25 at www.bostontheatrescene.com.
Light the Tree
Ring in the holidays with memories of a crackling, warm fire...that burned the Canadian city of Halifax to the ground. In 1917, friendly Bostonians aided our neighbor to the north with that pesky blaze, and since then, the kindly folks of Nova Scotia donate the Christmas tree at Boston Common. Come for the lighting, stay for the embarrassment of Canadians everywhere.
Thursday, November 30 at 6 p.m. Boston Common. Free.
Buy More Crap
Get your holiday shopping done early at the Boston Public Library holiday sale. Doors open at 10 a.m., and while there’s likely no Filene’s-wedding-dress-sale style rush, get there early for cards, prints, T-shirts, and photographs. Much of the proceeds (though curiously not all) go to the library.
Friday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Boston Public Library, Johnson Building, 700 Boylston St. Free.
En Avant Garde!
Support your neighborhood starving artists at the StoveFactory Studios in Charlestown. The gallery will open its studios to the beret-wearing public to schmooze with the artists and throw a few pennies their way for Finger Painting in Blue #8. Also, when you run into your Lit and Arts TF, you’ll totally get extra credit.
Saturday, Dec. 2 through Sunday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. StoveFactory Studios and Gallery, 523 Medford St. Free.
Snapshots
Local artists and pro photographers unite at the annual Faces of Cambridge benefit for Cambridge Student Partnerships. The annual gala is free, though a five dollar donation is suggested, and the proceeds (this time all of them) go to CSP, which works with low-income and homeless clients to find employment and services.
Saturday, Dec. 2 from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church, 1555 Mass. Ave. Free ($5 donation suggested).
