Let’s face it, you go to The Game to drink, not to see what New Haven
has to offer. But should you sober up for a moment or should an
unexpected case of drunk munchies hit you, consider eating at some of
these places. New Haven may have low academic standards, but it does
have excellent food.
Pepe’s, Sally’s, and Modern (157 & 273 Wooster St. & 874 State St.)
New Haven has some of the best pizza in the country. If
you can bear waiting in the inevitably long lines outside Pepe’s or
Sally’s—the traditionally competitive pizzerias on Wooster St.—then you
will end up meeting people from all over the country who stopped in New
Haven just to try the pizza.
Louis’ Lunch (261 Crown St. & 258 Elm St.)
When you enter this landmark, forgo any ideas you had of
putting ketchup on your burger. Louis’ claims to have invented the
hamburger in 1900 and believes that theirs are so good, ketchup can
only ruin the flavor. For a less intense, yet just as historical
hamburger, try The Yankee Doodle, in the middle of downtown New Haven.
Gourmet Heaven (15 Broadway & 44 Whitney Ave.)
Gourmet Heaven, located across from The Yankee Doodle,
will sate a college student at any hour of the day or night. Inside are
a buffet, a deli, and some exotic health foods. During the day the
buffet’s okay to eat from, but at 4 a.m., beware.
Mamoun’s (85 Howe St.)
Mamoun’s is open until 4 a.m. everyday, 365 days a year.
If you can get over the dim lighting, exotic wall decorum, and quietly
mumbling waiters, then you should consider Mamoun’s for a late-night
snack between parties; however, FM would definitely stick to the
falafel.
