The Fourth of July weekend is here--the deal is about to go down, and the engines of the Bicentennial industries wind tighter and tighter stretching that last bumpersticker, until the moment we've all waited 200 years for (or even since March) arrives amid fireworks and joyous music.

No, not Hendrix; not even Dylan or the Grateful Dead--rock in Bicentennial-weekend Boston breathes only a low whisper compared to the raucous shouting of the weeks to come when Tull and the Starship are to appear. But you can go hear:

Toots and the Maytals. Reggae got soul, and this is the best band in the Boston area this week. Sunday, in Lenox, Mass., 4 p.m. at the Music Inn.

Elton John. Old Eyeglasses is back, bringing the delightful mastery of his divine piano skills to the quiet intimacy of Schaeffer Stadium. With Dave Mason and John Miles, Sunday, at the Stadium in Foxboro, but tickets only at the Orpheum and Ticketron.

Gordon Lightfoot. Top 40 Gregorian chants from the Canadian troubador. Sunday, on the Cape at South Yarmouth, in the Cape Cod Coliseum.
