It's gratifying to see the Jazz Workshop is bringing in Jackie DeJohnette's group for a full week ending this Sunday. DeJohnette was Jackie McLean's greatest drummer in his sometime sextet, sometimes quintet combinations of the early 60s. He does more than just keep a beat. DeJohnette's group, directions, features John Abercrombie. Shows begin at 9 and 11 p.m.
Sandy's Jazz Revival has booked Flip Phillips through Saturday. Phillips, a tenor saxophonist, has played with the Woody Herman and Benny Goodman jazz bands.
On Sunday the ubiquitous Stanton Davis and the Ghetto Mysticism Band will play at Tuft's Cohen Auditorium. The $1 show begins at 8 p.m.
Up ahead, Airto, will be in concert at the Berklee Performance Center, April 19 at 7:30 p.m.
I know this isn't supposed to be my element, but pianist Rudolf Serkin is in town this Sunday, playing with a wind quintet at Jordan. Hall and he should not be missed by anyone who loves good piano music.
